Basic Score Calculation Formula
Non-Dealer Formula
Example: 30 fu 1 han = 30 × 4 × 2^3 = 960 → 1,000 points
Dealer Formula
Example: 30 fu 2 han = 30 × 6 × 2^4 = 2,880 → 2,900 points
Base Han: All hands automatically include +2 base han (displayed han + 2 = calculated han)
Rounding: Round up the last two digits to the nearest 100
Common Scores to Memorize

Score Calculation Tips
Honba Calculation
When there are honba (counter sticks), add "number of honba × 300 points" for ron wins, or "100 points from each player per honba" for tsumo wins to the base score. Example: 1 honba with 1,000 point ron → 1,300 points
Rounding
The last two digits are rounded up to the nearest 100. Example: 960 points → 1,000 points, 2,880 points → 2,900 points
Tsumo Payment (Non-Dealer)
When a non-dealer wins by tsumo, the dealer pays double what each non-dealer pays. The table displays "non-dealer payment / dealer payment".
Tsumo Payment (Dealer)
When the dealer wins by tsumo, all three non-dealers pay equally (all). Example: 2,000 all = each of the 3 non-dealers pays 2,000 points
Special Fu Cases
20 Fu
Only applies to pinfu tsumo. Closed pinfu tsumo is uniformly calculated as 20 fu. 20 fu 1 han does not exist (pinfu always has at least tsumo, making it 2+ han).
25 Fu
Exclusive to chiitoitsu (seven pairs). Chiitoitsu is always fixed at 25 fu.
110 Fu
The theoretical maximum fu. Rarely occurs with hands containing many concealed kans. Almost never seen in actual play but exists mathematically.
Practical Advice
- Start by memorizing scores for 30 fu, 40 fu, and 50 fu
- Mangan and above are fixed regardless of fu, so no fu calculation needed for 5+ han
- Riichi only (30 fu 1 han) at 1,000 points is the most fundamental score
- Remember that dealer scores are 1.5x non-dealer scores for easier calculation
- While online mahjong auto-calculates, this knowledge is essential for physical games
